And welcome to another episode of On Point Live right here from the CRN studios in Los Angeles. Hello, everybody. I'm Vince Ferragam. I'm a former Los Angeles Rams quarterback. And alongside of me is one of the most inspiring, one of the best ever to ever play his position offensive line in the NFL in the history. 10 years, not only 10 years, 20 years, NFL legend and Hall of Famer Jackie Slater. Jackie, great to see you again, buddy. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_04I'm doing good, Vince. And I always appreciate your that fine introduction that you give me. Uh, you know, I had a great time playing, Vince. You know that. And we were teammates for a long time. And, you know, it's just an honor to be able to wear this gold jacket on occasion.
SPEAKER_01Man, it looks good too, Jackie. Shoot, man, still fits you right. Yeah, it does.
SPEAKER_04I wore it for a special occasion, but that didn't work out, so you know, at least I can wear mine and feel good about it. And, you know, we enjoy each other and all of the sporting news that we got to talk about today.
SPEAKER_01Man, there's a lot going on, Jackie. Not so good for our home team in the NFL. Both teams didn't have fair out last week so good. But in baseball, we're looking good. We're looking real good. The Dodgers, the Dodgers are in again in the LD N LDS. But you know, this is the week of wild cards, Jack. This is gonna be some great games coming up this week. I know. You got the Red Sox playing the Yankees. Okay, Jack, you got the Phillies playing the Braves. I mean, these guys, they're out to get it. They got to win to move on.
SPEAKER_04They gotta win to move on.
SPEAKER_01All right, another team, Astros are playing the White Sox, Padres playing the Cubs. It's gonna be some great.
SPEAKER_04Well, the most important team is the LA Dodgers. And I think right now, Vince, they're just ready to peak. And this team has won back-to-back World Series titles. And wouldn't it be special, right, for all of us here in LA to see them win a title a third time in a row? It would be unbelievable.
SPEAKER_01Well, they've got pretty much everybody still intact. Everybody's still intact. And what I was gonna mention, Jen, you know how important that is, especially coming into the month of October. So we have to get ready to go. And the the experience factor is awesome because when you have that as a backbone, you can move forward. Right. And you really know how to deal with any adversity. You know what it takes. Well, let's do it.
SPEAKER_04You've been there before. Act like you've been there, they say this.

SPEAKER_01Well, welcome back to On Point Live right here at the CRN Studios. Um Vince Ferragum along with Jackie Slater. And Jackie, we have to uh talk about the stumbling Rams here in in weeks uh one, two, three. But this past weekend was was real interesting because again the Rams were on the road. Okay. The two road games that they've had, Jackie, they haven't done they haven't fared well. Now this time they're in Mile High Stadium playing the Broncos. What happened? We had this game, it was 16 to nothing at halftime, and it all disappeared in the second half. The the Broncos scored 30 points to walk away with a win. What what's going on?
SPEAKER_04Well, Vince, you know, I I happen to believe that this was the first time that the Rams uh probably experienced uh what it was like to be out of shape and then to go into a place where the altitude is a major, major problem. I remember playing in Denver, Vince, and right before the half, I was in shape when this was in the middle of the season, right before the half, an interception was thrown. The guy ran hard to the left, we chased him over there, hard back to the right, we chased him over there, and he just simply went out of bounds. I was at about midfield, Vince, and as I moved, it was halftime, as I walked towards the locker room, the whole time I'm thinking, is somebody gonna bring me some oxygen? Is somebody gonna come here with some oxygen? Because I need oxygen. As soon as I got in that locker room door, there was an oxygen tank sitting there. I grabbed the match, put it on my face, and I kept it on there for the entire half. Now you can say what you want about, you know, you can look at these receivers that uh uh he was throwing to Devontae Adams, had seven catches for 137 yards. These guys represent the very best on the Rams roster when it comes to conditioning. But for all the 300-pound people, for all the 290-pound people, the 300-plus pound people who did not play much in the preseason, who went and and struggled early in the season, the problem exists of having an inability to take in enough oxygen to support your certain certainly your brain health, number one, because there's a panic mode that sits in when you're not getting enough oxygen. That was a major problem. I don't care what anybody says.
SPEAKER_01Well, I I happened to look at some of the film that we watched on TV, and you saw a lot of reflections on the sideline, people in the oxygen mask. And, you know, I think there's there's definitely an advantage to the home team that's that's used to working out in that environment. There's no doubt about it. Working out in that altitude where the air is thinner, you know, you have to condition, and sometimes they say, if you want to get in great condition, go work out in a area where they're gonna be able to do that. And I know guys that did. I know guys that did. I mean, you do that and and it really it really had an effect, especially in the second half. As you mentioned, you came in the locker room striving to get some oxygen, they were ready to go. And they they just didn't seem like they were phased. And of course, let's look at Bo Nix, okay, the the quarterback. Now he's got a new offensive coordinator and Davis Webb. And I think we've seen a little bit of this confliction part that's happening on the sideline between him and Sean Payton. And you know, Sean's been very patient. He's sitting there, letting him take the advantage, let him get his full feet wet, and then get this play calling underway. But there's a way to to deliver this message to your team in such a way that people understand it, there's a good vibe with the team, and there's confidence that they have in the play calling. Right now it's not exactly there. So a lot of what they have Bo Nicks doing is standing in the pocket, which he is not the best quarterback at in-the-pocket passing. He's better on the move. And so you have to understand let's design an offense that's predicated around the talents of our team and what we've got to offer. And so, but you know, they've got to get that running game going, Jackie. I think they only have what 44 yards rushing in this game. And, you know, talking about the Broncos and their defense stepping up, a lot of teams now are using this three, four tight end schemes to try to eliminate this speed rush from the outside on some of these guys. So yeah, I think their game plan was adequate enough, obviously, to beat the one.
SPEAKER_04One other thing, and I have people ask me this, they wanted to know about Puka Nakua. Yeah. They wanted to know was his absence uh did it contribute to this loss. Well, all you gotta do is look and see Canada Montfield. Kannada Montfield, he had four receptions for almost 100 yards and a touchdown. I mean, you can't ask much more than that for a complimentary receiver if you're featuring Devontae Adams. Right. I I just think that when you look at the overall uh ram attack uh in the first half, they did everything they wanted to do. Kyron Williams was outstanding throughout the game. But in the second half, they didn't lean on him that much. We hardly saw him. He had 150, 158 yards, total yards in the first half, and in the second half, we hardly saw him. Mac Vay hardly used him. I think it's because he saw him coming to the sideline, sucking that bad oxygen, and he didn't want to expose him when he has this two-headed monster with he and Kyron Williams that he likes to serve up. Uh I I really do believe that this was a this was a problem that was associated with first of all, not being in ready football shape after a month of regular season games, I think they're still climbing that mountain uh for the zenith of conditioning, especially with the 300 plus pound people.
SPEAKER_01And especially early in the season. And that really makes a difference, uh, being in great shape, be in great game shape form to to enter into the regular season. And and some teams are are better prepared going into the season like that. And I I would have to say that Denver has been a come from behind team. I mean, Bo Nicks has he's uh the only quarterback that has seven fourth quarter comebacks, he's the number one. He's got nine game winning drives, he's number one in that. Twenty touchdowns when trailing by one score or more. So what does that tell you?
SPEAKER_04When you add all of that up, and then you throw in Matthew Stafford being the number one, he has thrown for more pick sixes than any quarterback in NFL history. It's amazing to me. Yes. You know, he's still trying, but a pick six is a pick six, Vince, and that broke their backs in the second half.
SPEAKER_01I think that got Denver going. I got it, they got turned around in that in that particular pick six because Hufunga in the second half had him dialed in. Oh. He had Matt Stafford dialed in. He was reading where he was gonna go with the football, Jackie, and he anticipated the throws, and every anticipation was correct.
SPEAKER_04Um and so his eyes were definitely in the backfield then.
SPEAKER_01Right there.
SPEAKER_04Definitely in the backfield.
SPEAKER_01And you know, they talk a lot about the pass interference um call that you know was n wasn't called, or was called, and they thought that it was a true interception. Right. Well, you know, there's a fine line between interfering with the receiver who's got the right to move to the football, and a defender who's inhibiting that receiver's move. Right. That is the main key, and it happened prematurely. It happened before everybody saw it on film. Right. And so this was the mistake that they made. And I think Jalen Watson, losing Jalen Watson to a shoulder injury, I think that had something to do with a little bit of what happened there. But it was just a take control, it was confidence building every play by play in the second half for Denver. And they made their way back, Jack. They're used to doing this, and you have to be prepared if you're gonna play the Broncos. Hey, this team is a coming from behind teams.
SPEAKER_04It uh is at his very, very best when he is behind and in the second half. Did you did you not say that to me two weeks ago?
SPEAKER_01His nature is he's a playmaker, first of all, Jackie. He he can do whatever he needs to do to make a play. If he has to move with his legs, if he has to do with his arm, he has to throw a crossbody, he has to do, you know, get the running game going or have him take a direct run.
SPEAKER_04He does what he has to do. He has to do what he does. To keep his team going him on the field.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, he he makes so much, and I think Sean Payton is still a question mark with Davis Webb in my mind as a quarterback. I've seen some great offensive coordinators that have taken the job at the helm now, and Jackie are doing remarkably well.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, Clint Kubiak, tons of guys, Joe Brady.
SPEAKER_04Tons of guys.
SPEAKER_01I mean, there are guys out there.
SPEAKER_04I don't know, and I don't know that I agree with you uh when you say that Sean Payton is being patient. Sean Payton got his job because of his ability to play call, because of what he did with Drew Brees and what he's got and accomplished with other quarterbacks. Sean Payton is a play caller. Who is who's he trying to fool standing up on the sideline with a guy like Davis Webb, who you said is making mistake after mistake after mistake. Why is Sean Payton allowing that to happen? I think the fans deserve better. And I think the people in Denver are going to demand that. Even Corey sitting here, who is the number one Denver Bronco fan here on the West Coast, he doesn't like the fact that Peyton is not calling players. Corey's a big Denver Bronco fan. He don't even know anything about Davis Webb. And he's been following the Denver Broncos since he was knee-high to a bullpro.
SPEAKER_01Is this segment supposed to end here pretty soon, Corey? I don't know. Do we have a 10-minute segment? We'll be right back. Well, welcome back to On Point Live. Remember HarmonyCheese.com. Just go right to the website, put in CRN Talk and get your discount there. And uh we want to remind our viewers that uh we're on four times a week, Tuesdays from uh four to five and from eight to nine Pacific Standard Time. We're on Wednesdays 11 to 12 and Saturdays eight to nine and Sundays early in the morning, six to seven, Jackie on CRN Talk.
SPEAKER_04Corey, would you say would you agree with me? I think Vince is getting quite smooth at this, don't you think?
SPEAKER_01What do you think?
SPEAKER_02Smooth as silk.
SPEAKER_04He is smooth as silk. Yeah, we gotta remind you. Do you send the scripts to him like two or three days in advance?
SPEAKER_02No, I like to get him surprised. That's when he's at his best.
SPEAKER_04Oh, is that right? Yeah, just like today. Just like today.
SPEAKER_02Like his quarterback and under pressure, he's he's he's calm and collected.
SPEAKER_01Man, you gotta complete those passes, yeah. You gotta get him thrown, then.
SPEAKER_04How many pick sixes did you throw?
SPEAKER_01Oh, shoot, man. You know, I only two I can remember. Two pick sixes.
SPEAKER_04One, two, uh you played 11 years in the NFL.
SPEAKER_01Hollywood Henderson took off. But that was my one of my first plays ever. I was relieving Pat Hayden and I remember that. That was that book. I almost tackled him. What in the world?
SPEAKER_04He was just a little bit more fleet of foot than I was.
SPEAKER_01And how about uh Darren um oh, he was the cornerback uh Green. Wasn't it Darren Green? Yes, Darryl Green. Daryl Green. Daryl Green for watching last week.
SPEAKER_04He picked you off? Hey, pick you off. He didn't get out throwing a sideline pass. Way too fast. I didn't have a snowball chance to get to him.
SPEAKER_01But you know, interception's part of the game. But you know, it's how you come back from it, how you fight back, improve, and get better as your team. Because you know, you don't want to let your team down.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Because we'll we'll be watching.
SPEAKER_01We want we want to see how the Well, you know, better luck next week for the Rams and the Chargers. They got to get back on the winning track, Jack. Uh the Rams have to travel to Philadelphia. And Philadelphia came with a uh upsided uh loss in in that game this past week. But let's go back to the Charger game. They had to travel to Buffalo at the new stadium in Buffalo, New York. Jackie, uh you you mentioned a little bit about Jim Harbaugh on the sideline, the the look, the glary look in his face. He's just he just can't believe what he's seen.
SPEAKER_04With his mouth that's what it is. With his mouth open then. Yeah, that's what he's shocked and dismayed.
SPEAKER_01He's in shock, pretty much. I mean, I think Mike McDaniel came in with high hopes with their offense. But you know, they played better as a team. They just played a really good team in the Buffalo Bills, but the Buffalo Bills turned the ball over five times. Now, they had ten penalties. You would think what's the chances of you winning if your opponent gives up the ball. And four sacks allowed. You've got to win the game, right? You gotta win that game.
SPEAKER_04I just don't know. James Cook rushed for 155. Oh, there you go. That's one yards including a 77-yard fourth quarter run. Yeah. I mean, the Chargers forced three takeaways but scored only 10 points off of them and failed to 0-3. I I I can't put my finger on it, Vince. I simply can't put my finger on it because you and I agreed at the start of the season that we expected both Jim and John's football teams to be very successful. And why did we expect that? Because they run the football. They make it a habit of using their big people, and they use them at the line of scrimmage, and they demand that they run the football for the offensive coordinators, and they do that, and that is one of the key uh pillars to being successful offensively. You gotta have balance by running the football. And and to me, I just I can't put a finger on it. I can't put a finger on it beyond the fact that they're just uh dog snake bit right now.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think a little bit, um, and as I look at both those teams and with between quarterback, coach, and offensive scheme, I think there is a little bit of some kind of fragment that's fragmented between the the offensive-minded uh coordinator and his head coach. So in both cases, I mean we we've seen it, and I don't know if they're in sync with one another. That's the only thing I can think of. And I think Jim Harbaugh has his own game plan, he has his own thoughts about how to run the football, how to be physical at the line of scrimmage. Mike McDaniel has in a total, completely different thought process. Yeah. It's happening with the giants. He's never struck me as a play caller who wanted to beat you up at the line of scrimmage. And Matt Nagy and Greg Roman, same difference with John Harbaugh over there. Of course, they've lost their quarterback, their starting quarterback, that is a big d difference. But they're they they have to get more on the same page, and I think those guys really need to spend the whole entire week together.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01And learn each other and figuring out what they want to do going forward. It's not so much the guys on the field, it's the game plan they're trying to reproduce. Vince.
SPEAKER_04Now, Jim Harbaugh, and I'm gonna we're gonna move on. Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers started all in three against three first year NFL head coaches. Now, who are they? Mike LaFleur, the Cardinals, Clint Kubiak of the Raiders, and Joe Brady of the Bills, all in their first year as heads coaches. And Jim Harbaugh and his offensive coordinator can't manage to beat these guys. I don't think it's a personnel issue, Vince.
SPEAKER_01And Clint Kubiak and Joe Brady are both 3-0 with their teams. Right. And the biggest turnaround is the Raiders. Because now they're doing it with Kirk Cousins, who has nine touchdown passes in three games, and so does Brock Purdy.
SPEAKER_04But Vince, you two quarterbacks leading the league. When Kubiak signed with the Raiders, you said that is the beginning of the end for Seattle, and the Raiders are on their way up. That was the first thing that came out of your mouth. And doggone if you didn't hit the nail.
SPEAKER_01They have really done well. Their offense has been inconsistent at best. And we'll talk about that game coming up a little bit, Jackie, about the you know what they did to the commanders did to the to the Seattle Seattle Seahawks. Okay, the other game, the Steelers, you know, Jackie, real quickly beat the Bengals and Joe Burrow has been fantastic, but you know, he had a a little problem late in the game. And you know what? In the last eight minutes of the game, I think, Jackie, he's like one in thirty-four. So they really have to be more like the Broncos. They got to really come from behind. Right. If you're behind, that's when you want to win. You want to save your best for last, right?
SPEAKER_04Absolutely. And the thing that concerns me about Cincinnati and Joe is that I'm not sure that they uh that defenses are being met with the same intensity in the way they run the football as the way, as to the way that they pass the football. We know about the receivers, how very decorated. We know about Joe Burrow's arms and his pocket presence and his leadership. We know about all that. But what about their ability to run the football? Who are their running backs? How many of them are averaging three to five yards per carry anywhere in there that supplements a really good passing game and gives any offense a chance to be successful? This is where I think we're losing our where they're losing traction in Cincinnati is that in their inability to consistently run the football and be a threat of running the football.
SPEAKER_01Well, let's travel overseas again, Jackie. There was another team played internationally, I think. Oh, right, Corey, Rio de Janeiro. Rio. Yeah. Brazil. All the Ravens travel all the way there to play the Cowboys.
SPEAKER_04And they won, Vince.
SPEAKER_0134 to 31. That game came right down to the wire, and the Cowboys with Brack Dak Prescott had a chance to win this game, Jackie. I saw his receiver wide open in the end zone, and the ball sailed way over his head. That was the game winner. Then they had to settle for the field goal. The Ravens get the ball with seven seconds left to go in the game, and instead of kicking a ball that can be returned and run some time off the clock, now you would think, well, seven seconds we have this game, right? If you kick the ball out of the end zone, no time has expired. They had seven seconds. They throw a long pass, complete it. They get a first down within kicking range. With one second left, he kicks the game winner. They went crazy. I think Lamar Jackson was going to pull a hamstring run sitting down the field.
SPEAKER_04Did you see him sprinting down the field? Oh, he was so happy. That's what I like to see, Vince. A leader that's excited about somebody. Now he made a big play right before that kick. Remember you? Had a big pay pass play. A big pass, about 20-something yards. Yeah. But he was so excited to see that field goal kicker put it right between the uprights and then win the game. The first guy down there, and that's the kind of quarterback you were, Vince. You were that type of guy. Celebrate with your team. That's why you play the game.
SPEAKER_01That's why you play the game. Man, and I don't care. And he came off the sideline sprinting like crazy. Sprinting down, Tyler Loop, a little guy. Tyler Loop was what, like five foot five, kicked some 58-yard field goal? I mean, that was a six-yard field goal. Was that not fun to see then? It was. It was fun to see. Let's go to the Raiders real quick, Jackie. And the Raiders played the Saints. Now, I've I've been impressed with Kellen Moore, okay, in this offensive scheme. All right. And Tyler Shuck, what he's been able to do. They came up short late in the game, but you know what? I've been very impressed with him overall. And then the Raiders. Clint Kubiak, his innovation, his schemes with two, three tight ends, two tight ends. They got Brock Powers back Bowers back in the action, Jack. And he's doing with Kirk Cousins. And guess who's learning on the sideline? It's Fernando Mendoza.
SPEAKER_04Fernando Mendoza is a very good thing. He is learning as much by watching as he is by playing, believe me, right now. Yeah, that now when you said that, I'm thinking to myself, I guess that it does make a lot of sense. Because he's not an ignorant guy. He's a very bright guy. I understand that he picks up on new material very quickly. And for him to be standing there watching Kirk Cousin, not he's not making a lot of mistakes. He's watching Kirk Cousin almost invented form, just making play after play after play. And to learn from a guy like that, I see why the organization spent the money to bring him in. I didn't see it at first, but now I see the plan, and it's obviously going to be very good for that.
SPEAKER_01If it doesn't rear its head, but you can tell a quarterback by the coaching that he's getting, how he performs on the field. You see Kirk Cousins, he looks quick one way, not there, boom. He's got it, he has the progression, the process that's been entrained in him by the coach telling him, look, if this guy's not open, this guy's gonna be open. Bam, bam, bam. Go there. And that's how you play the game. Yeah. Okay, how about the commanders and the Seahawks? They went back to to Sam Darnold. Why? When when Drew Locke is playing so good, why would you go back to Sam Darnold? I he won the MVP. Okay, yeah, he won it with Kenneth Walker. Okay, who's been great with Kansas City, by the way. But you know what, Jackie? They weren't, he wasn't, they should set him down, said, wait, get that oblique, get it really well. It's okay. You're okay. We got another week. We had a long season ahead. Absolutely. Let Drew Locke keep going. Absolutely. And then they got beat by a backup quarterback. Absolutely. And Marcus Mariota, who's good. No turnovers.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01They had three turnovers and another pick six that came back to haunt his team.
SPEAKER_04Yes. By Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold had no business in the game, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_01No. Even though his numbers weren't bad, man. That was his first game of the year because forget the first game. Anyway, uh, we gotta thank you know our sponsors. SPEAKER_01Well, hello everybody, and welcome back to On Point Live. We're here for our final segment, Jackie, and uh let's talk a little bit about Harmony Cheese. You know what? My daughter last night made a great soup, minestroni soup, and we'll you know what we put on top of it? The Parmesan cheese. It was delicious. I mean, it well, that's my favorite cheese. Well what I mean, you've got to like some of these cheeses with with all your cheese.
SPEAKER_04Yes, I I have said that to you over and over and over. I I like cheese, but but particularly this cheese, and Miss Bree will tell you that I'm that I'm sending it to my friends and family all over the country. The thing that I like about cheese, Vince, and let me try to get this to penetrate your skull. The thing that I like about cheese is the simplicity of it all. I don't, you know, I don't have to have it buried in some uh uh concoction to, you know, to do something to my taste, buds. I just give me a simple uh spread of cheese on some toast. Give me some cheese, uh you just with some, you know, put a toothpick in it and give me some crackers.
SPEAKER_01Well, what do you like? Do you like the pepper jack or you like the mild cheddar or do you like the Merlot cheddar? I like all of their cheese. I like all of their cheese.
SPEAKER_04I like the matter with whenever I talk, whenever I order cheese, yeah, I don't I don't say send me this, that, or the other. I I'll say make sure some of this, that, or the other is in my package. But just send me the cheese because I've always I've always liked cheese since I was a kid. Yeah. And it's one of the reasons why I didn't have to uh uh be injecting myself with all sorts of performances enhancing uh things to to gain weight. You know, it was one of the simple pleasures in life that allowed me to put extra weight on, and I enjoyed it. Well, if people want good cheese, just have them go to harmonycheese.com and they need to ask for Miss Breeze there. They need to ask for Miss Bree, and she's gonna tell them about everything that they have and even talk to them about what they like the taste of. She can compare their cheeses to this, to that, to the other, and and that's a good way to make a selection.
SPEAKER_01Tell them you heard it from CRN radio with on point live and discount. You get a discount, absolutely. Absolutely. Well, we're back to football again, folks, and uh, you know, it's the third week in the NFL season, regular season, Jack just starting off here. But uh some teams are red hot, some teams are just slow coming out of the gate. So, but I think that the Browns, let's look at Cleveland Browns, what they've done in the off season, and now how are they projecting moving forward? They've got a guide Deshaun Watson, they spent a lot of money for, but you know, remember, Jack, coming out of college, coming into the NFL, his he had great talent. Great talent. And you know, he was sidelined for a bit with injury and for other reasons. Right. But now he's back with a coach that knows how to handle him and get him to play at his very best, and that's Todd Muntkin. Right.
SPEAKER_04Not to mention uh Travis Switzer, who came with Todd Muntkin, who is the OC. The combination of those two guys are making sure that he is constantly being inundated with information that's gonna make him a better football player. But one of the things that when you mention the Cleveland Browns, Vince, that jumps out at me, and that is the misfortune that my former team uh has come upon with dealing with Miles Garrett. Now, looking at this situation a little bit deeper, it seems to me that the new offensive head coach, Todd Munkin, and the new offensive coordinator, Switzer, Travis Switzer, who are basically running this football team right now, were there for five months before they traded Miles Garrett. Five months, Vince. Yeah. Now that tells me that they were intimately acquainted with the health of Miles Garrett and everybody else that's on that football team. And they probably were aware of the fact that Miles Garrett was going to have to have a surgery that was gonna keep him out more than a week or two. And so, what do does this imply? Does this imply to you that there was some bamboozling going on as it relates to how they uh uh you know sold him off on the Rams? Because look at what they got, Vince. They got a first round pick, they got a second round pick, a third round pick in consecutive years, and they got Jared Verse. Jared Verse had six pressures last week. Six pressures last week. Don't you think those pressures could could have attributed to the Rams winning just as well as it's sure did because it kept it kept uh Bryant Young under wraps.
SPEAKER_01It's certainly. Okay, and Canales is a good coach with Carolina, he's trying to turn that program around, and they really had a lot of success defensively because they would held that team to 18 points. But again, Deshaun Watson was able to lead his team from behind late in the fourth quarter. Jack, he rolled out on a pass, got elusive, was elusive out of the pocket. Only a few players can do what he did, and he moved to his left and he threw a dart to an open receiver in the end zone. It was a beautiful play. And this is a result of coaching. And what is the first thing you do when you acquire a new team? You analyze your personnel.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_01So in January, they analyzed their personnel, they figured out which way they need to go towards what they need to do is change this program around to a winning program.
SPEAKER_04They gave a good long look.
SPEAKER_01Get those fans cheering again.
SPEAKER_04They gave a good long look at the defensive player of the year.
SPEAKER_01They did, and he must have been injured because why would they let him go?
SPEAKER_04Andrew Berry, the general manager. That's it. And they and they and they traded him away.
SPEAKER_01Andrew Berry, they knew something. Not any doubt in my mind now because he came to the Rams and he hasn't he's now he's having surgery. Right. Now Vince. He can't there had to be something going on with him when he first came to the Rams. Where's the Rams?
SPEAKER_04Remember the the great pass rusher uh over at the uh Raiders? That they that that they was they were trying to trade the king the kid. And then he failed the physical? Yes. And with Baltimore. Yeah, and they sent him back to the Raiders. And they sent him and they sent him back to the Raiders.
SPEAKER_01Well why I wonder why this that type of a situation didn't occur with the Rams. I don't know. They they uh they overlooked that and everybody was thinking, Miles Garrett, and you and I both know what a great generational player he is. Oh, no doubt about it. And healthy, there's nobody better. There's nobody better. So why would the people in Cleveland let him go? Well, there had to be something, had to be a reason. All right, let's move on to the Lions. Lions, the Lions again, uh Jared Goff comes, brings his team from behind, but the big story to me there, not only is Amon St. Brown, is Jamar Gibbs. Okay, Jamar Gibbs had three second half touchdowns, rushed for 164 yards total offense. I mean, the the guy the guy is just remarkable. He he's a he's a game changer.
SPEAKER_04Vince, the guy had four, he has four career games with two rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown. And only Rams great Marshall Falk is the only player since the merger with more, and he has five.
SPEAKER_03Man.
SPEAKER_04And this guy's 24 years old, which means he's got a very good possibility that he can do that again. And he's durable, Jack. It's unbelievably durable.
SPEAKER_01He's durable and he can run and that's you know, we don't see a whole lot of big backs.
SPEAKER_04We don't see a lot of big backs in there.
SPEAKER_01Fast, though fast.
SPEAKER_04They're little quick guys. Like the Rams with these two little backs. These guys are changed direction, insert into the line of scrimmage, get as many yards as possible to compliment the pass.
SPEAKER_01Let's go to let's go to Boston. We got the Jaguars playing the Patriots. And I look at both quarterbacks. I look at Drake May and I look at Trevor Lawrence. And I see Trevor Lawrence beautifully mechanically throwing the football. He's got great form. Liam Cohen is coaching him. Okay. I don't know what's going on with Drake May. I see a little bit of a bent over throw by Drake May. I think he's having a little bit of So all of a sudden you see a bent overthrow? No, I I I see that.
SPEAKER_04I thought that was had something to do with his uh general physical policy.
SPEAKER_01No, no, I I I don't know. I don't know what it is right now. I think he's having uh is a little setback, but you know, he's he's got some talent. He's obviously was runner up for the MVP last year. I thought he had a great season this year, didn't bounce back.
SPEAKER_04Does he still have the office same offensive coordinator?
SPEAKER_01Yes, he still has the same offensive. Is that Tom Brady had? Yes. Okay, so he's gotta he's gotta improve. He's gotta just get a mindset, he's gotta break back down to the basic fundamentals. That's what he's gotta do. And once he does that, then I think you'll see a resurgence of the of the Patriots. Okay, let's go. The Colts and the Texans. The Colts with Shane Steichen, they win another game with a field goal at the end of the game. Uh they're able to uh uh uh upset the Texans. The Texans were slotted to be a great team this year. They're 0-3.
SPEAKER_04They're 0-3 then with a hometown, home raised head coach who knows the community, who knows the team as well as anybody ever will know this team, and they simply can't manage to win football games. They have an inability to consistently run the football on key third downs, in my opinion, this is where they come up really short. If that ball has to cover seven or more yards, this is where they struggle, man. They are not uh they're not doing a very good job there, and it's showing week in and week out. They can't win in ball games the way their quarterback's playing.
SPEAKER_01Today's football, you have to be well balanced. You have to have that running game, you have to have that passing game, and you have to have versatility and creativity. And if you have that, you're gonna win. Okay, the Chiefs, the Dolphins, again, Andy Reid, Eric Biemeny come into forefront. They beat the Dolphins, they're 3-0. They've got the triple crown racehorse in Kenneth Walker, man. I'm telling you, this guy is unbelievable. He's lights out, he's electric. He's just run, he doesn't come down. You can't tackle him.
SPEAKER_04He is electric. He is dynamic. He's not so big as to be cumbersome, and he's not so small as to be scatty. He is smooth, smooth, silky, smooth running with the football. He reminds me a little bit of Eric Dickerson, only he's smaller, more compact, and he's quicker than Eric was. Boom, boom. He's gonna be a very uh there's no doubt in my mind. You know, I used to hear this all the time when we played against Barry Sanders and uh and Sims and all them guys who were really good backs. Uh we had heared all week long. The defensive coordinators would be preaching it to the guys, hey, we've got to stop this run. This guy's special. And then before we started any meeting, we saw show a picture of this guy making a big run. Jack. That's who this guy is. There's no doubt about it. And the people better come to grips with the fact they gotta stop him.
SPEAKER_01Now you've played with some great running backs, but in my estimation, my evaluation of a great running back is his mindset and his quality of personality. You play great Eric Dickerson, great personality, calmness to him. Barry Sanders. You look at this guy, Kenneth Walker, he has no emotion on his face. He's a polite guy. Just goes out and runs it and gets it done. Walter Payton, another one. Oh, yeah. Okay, these guys, I look at a guy first, forget his running ability. What kind of mindset do you have? That's the guy I want on my team.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, well, you know what? It's funny you didn't say uh Jerome Betters. Because Jerome Betters was totally nothing like this guy. Yeah. Jerome Betters was a battering ram. He'd run over you, get up, and start mouthing at you and everything. I'd be one that said, man, get back in the huddle and shut up before you make this guy mad. I gotta deal with him next play on the next play. But he was a Jerome Betis was just a different big freak. You know, he's he was the bust, as we call him, and took a lot of people to bring him down. But this guy, you know, I I don't think I've ever I don't think I ever played with anybody as as smooth as this player.
SPEAKER_01They're they're really good, Jackie. And uh again, again, their attitude and the way they they carry themselves is number one is the primary and I think a lot of these coaches that are being hired in the NFL recognize those traits of these players that they want on their team. You look at Joe Brady, Kyle Shanahan, Andy Reid, Kevin O'Connell, Clint Kubiak, Sean Payton, Todd Munkin, Liam Cohen, Sean McVeigh. They like guys. Yeah. You know, they they they want their guys on their team that they'll respond when they uh hardship or whatever the deal is going forward. Look at the 49ers, Jackie. Okay, 49ers, 3-0, they come out hot. They're running at a precise level. I mean, I think it's precision. You got the John Lynch you talked about, Kyle Shanahan. They're learning from Mike Shanahan. What is that history like there, Jake? They run the show.
SPEAKER_04Right. There's here's a head coach and a general manager, yeah. Much like another handful of successful teams that we can look around the league and see, but they are running this football team. There is no differentiation. This general manager is going out and getting what this head coach feels that he needs to be successful. And don't you I'm gonna say this, Vince. This will probably be the third or fourth time that I've mentioned this to you. Yeah. But if you think for one minute that Kyle Shanahan's father is not somewhere contributing to the efforts of his son and former player that's now general manager, you are out of your mind. Well, hey, credit to you. You play the 49ers, you're playing against a lot of Shanahan.
SPEAKER_01Give credit to Kyle uh Kevin O'Connell, too, with Minnesota with Kyler Murray, man. 3-0. Absolutely. Playing some ball and playing defense, and you like their defense accordingly.
SPEAKER_04How about them trade McCarthy? Didn't waste any time trading.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, JJ's over at the Giants. Well, hey, we'll be back for our closing uh predictions of next week's game. Remember to follow us on Instagram and also onpointlive.net. Don't forget, that's our website. We'll be right back. Well, welcome back to On Point Live. Well, we're here with the most exciting part of the day. Jackie, we've got to pick our teams for week four in the NFL. We got to start on Thursday night. Thursday night football game, Pittsburgh Steelers at the Cleveland Browns, who are hot right now. Both teams. Yeah, they should be. What do you like, Jackie? I'm gonna have to go with the Cleveland Browns. How about you, Corey? I'm gonna go with the Browns as well. I'm going with Todd Munken and the Browns. Okay, we got Sunday. We have Indianapolis Colts against the Commanders at Washington. I'm going with the Indianapolis Colts.
SPEAKER_02I'm going with the Colts too. How about you, Corey? I'm going to take the Commanders. I think Mariota looked pretty good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he did. But the Colts won last week. Yep. They're on a roll. Okay, the Cardinals have to travel to New York to play the Giants, Jackie.
SPEAKER_04That's all right. That's all right. I'm going with Arizona.
SPEAKER_01Arizona? Yeah, it's a rough one, but I'll take Arizona. I'm going to take the Cardinals too. I think he's doing a good job. So we'll how about the Patriots at the Bills?
SPEAKER_04Buffalo.
SPEAKER_01Buffalo. Buffalo, Buffalo. Buffalo. Here we go. Circle the Raggers. I got the Buffalo Bills. New York Jets at the Bears. Case Keenum wins last week.
SPEAKER_04The Chicago Bears.
SPEAKER_01So me too. The Bears. Okay, we're all in agreement. Dallas Cowboys at the Texans.
SPEAKER_04Jerry's got them rolling in Dallas.
SPEAKER_01How about you, Corey? I have Dallas as well. I'm going the other way. I'm going with the Texans. They got to win a game. Their own three. Okay, how about this? A tough game for me. The Rams at the Eagles, and they haven't traditionally played well when they traveled to Philadelphia. Why is it so tough for you? Picking the Rams. I mean, Jalen Hurts. You led the kick off. I know it, but all right, I got to go with the Rams because they got to come back. They have to bounce back after last week. I'll take the Ravens. Alright, here we go. They got Pooker probably too. The Packers traveled to play the Bucks, Jackie.
SPEAKER_04I'm going with the Green Bay Packers.
SPEAKER_01Same here, same here. I got the Buccaneers. I'm going to go with them again. Hopefully they'll come back.
SPEAKER_04No quarterback?
SPEAKER_01The Titans at the Ravens. Ravens all the way. I got Ravens. How about you, Jack? I'm going with Lamar and the Baltimore. Okay, Jaguars at the Bengals. I got the Jaguars. I got the Bengals.
SPEAKER_04I got the Jaguars.
SPEAKER_01Okay, Dolphins at Vikings, Jackie.
SPEAKER_04I'm going with Minnesota.
SPEAKER_01I got the Vikings. I got the Vikings as well. Yeah. Kansas City at the Raiders. Chiefs. Chiefs. Chiefs, me too. Chargers at the Seahawks. Super Bowl Seahawks. Seahawks for me. Broncos at the 49ers. This is a big game. 49ers.
SPEAKER_02Taking the Broncos.
SPEAKER_01I gotta go with the 49ers. 49ers, Brock Purdy. Okay, Lions at Carolina. I'm going with Detroit, Jared Goff. I'm going with Goff. I'm going with Gibbs, man. I got Lions too. And the Falcons on Monday night at the Saints. I got the Saints.
SPEAKER_04I'm going with the Saints.
SPEAKER_01Me too. Saints. And what do we say here, Jackie? Stay on point.
