Time once again for On Point Live, right here from the CRN Studios in Los Angeles. Well, hello everybody. I'm Vince Ferragamo, former Los Angeles Rams, Super Bowl quarterback. Alongside me is my longtime friend, 20-year NFL legend, Hall of Famer, number 78, seven-time Pro Bowler, Jackie. Thank you very much. Jackie Slater.
SPEAKER_02You know, Vince, I said this last week. I'm gonna say it again. You're getting a lot better at this, my friend. I love I love the introductions.
SPEAKER_04We miss Mike, you know. We hope you know back speedy recovery. Come on, Mike. We're waiting on you, Mike. You gotta get back in here with us. Well, Jackie, we're talking about the NFL season is National Football League. First week in the NFL regular season, Jackie, to me, it was the most exciting, the most point scored, and probably some of the best football that we've seen in a long time in week number one.
SPEAKER_02Right. Did you not? And one of the things that's reared his head, and you and I talked about this over a year ago. I said one of the things that we're going to start seeing in the National Football League is a resurgence of the rushing attack. And I'll be doggone Vince if it doesn't hold I mean, it is holding up. People who are running the football, and you come up with an interesting stat about the percentage of times that quarterback are under center. And you know that if you're under center, you're gonna be running the football or using play action pass. You got both those options.
SPEAKER_0477% of the times, Jackie, the teams have been under center with their quarterback. And what does that do? That is a prominent run-oriented offense. But the play action pass is quite evident. Right. And the what you can use, and I think it gives you more variability. It gives you just the expansive offense. Because then you jump in the shotgun, then you get the whole works. Right. But teams that prepared going into week one, Jackie, like the Chiefs, the 49ers, the Giants, the Bengals, the Bears, Jackie.
SPEAKER_02They played everybody in the regulars in the Patrick Mahomes coming off of a career, a season ending and career-threatening injury, he played 33 snaps in the preseason.
SPEAKER_04Well, you know, there is so much to talk about with this first week in the NFL. So many great games. We're going to talk all about it, Jackie. It's going to be great. But we have to get back to one of the most interesting and pent-up games that came with so much preseason talk was this Rams 49ers game that was going to be played overseas in Melbourne, Australia.
SPEAKER_02And they've known about this for what? Two years.
SPEAKER_04Oh God.
SPEAKER_02I guess they have, Jackie. I I didn't realize it until this past year, but yeah, but how about we were talking to Corey this morning, our producer, yes, and he pulled up all of this information about how over the last couple of years the Rams have been exploring how they wanted to approach this trip by sending people over there. Right. Corey, how how many people did they send over over a period of time?
SPEAKER_03Yes, of the last two years the Rams have spent researching, they've sent fifteen staff members over to and I actually looked in more while we were talking, and they actually did because we were wondering if they actually sent players over. Right. And they ended they had Kevin Dotson and Kyron Williams as guinea pigs. Oh they had some big things. They did. They they tracked their sleep rhythms, body data, and travel fatigue, and they w they they ended up going with their strategy of flying out the day before and leaving the day of, basically.
SPEAKER_02Wow, that that was a big risk, Vince.
SPEAKER_04Didn't you think? Well, I mean, I don't know if all this um uh you know extra effort to research it to see if guys how they actually fared out after a short trip, you know, after your body reacted to the long trip, but the Rams were pretty much dominated in this game by the 49ers 27 to 7.
SPEAKER_02I didn't like what I was seeing at all. I didn't I you know I hate the 49ers with a passion. I know. Did I ever tell you that?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you did. With a passion. So, Jackie, was this more of a coaching failure? I mean, were the guys there are so many things that go into coaching and preparation. So game planning, I mean decisions you have to make for your team is your team, the personnel, all these things. Let's just get into it. The travel, we talked about it beforehand.
SPEAKER_02I wasn't in favor of a short trip around. Me either. Me either. I've been to London, I've been to Japan as a player, and trust me, the more time you have on foreign soil to get used to playing your game uh in a different time zone, the better off you're going to be. I I I I thought there would be some problems, and they they seemed to m uh rear their head and they were ugly, if you ask me, what some of the things that I saw.
SPEAKER_04Well, the Rams, you know, strategy was to to make stay on the West Coast travel clock, you know, your body clock. So it that didn't really pan out. It didn't work, Jackie. And uh it looked like sometimes during the game they were half asleep. Yeah. I mean, I don't know what they were thinking about.
SPEAKER_02It was just uh it was just a real lack of uh of of the kind of effort that we're used to seeing. We've we've all grown accustomed to seeing when these two teams meet. This is one of the best divisions in all of pro football, maybe the best division uh in the NFC when you think about it. But you know, we just didn't see that. We I thought the 49ers uh were were played at a at a different level. It was just as simple as that. And we and we knew they were gonna be very good because Kyle Shanahan always has his teams prepared whenever they play the Rams because you know I think he's 12 and seven. 12 and 7 against the Rams, and that that says that he's matching Mac Vay, you know, tip for tap with the coaching. So I I was kind of disappointed um, you know, that that the Rams would not, you know, but think about this, Vince. The National Football League is spending a lot of time outside of its borders, the country of America, and playing all the way. They want to make the National Football League a worldwide sport. And and I don't and I don't think there's anything wrong with growing a very popular sport that we think of the National Football League here in our country. But the but the thing that that that that throws me off a little bit is why would you not go to a foreign country, to a to a foreign country and play a game and then show up as late as they did. I I don't think that was considered because think about it. The 49ers were there for the entire week. They visited and they bumped heads with the locals and all of the businesses. I understand that all anywhere you could go and buy a souvenir of any sort was all bought up, was all bought up in there by uh 49er fans and 49er players and their wives and everything, and and they showed, they showed this country that they care and they want to learn and they want to. And and then by the same token, you know, we show up, the Rams show up, you know, just on the eve of the game, and and nobody gets to know them. I heard I heard I was very disappointed when I heard on the radio, when I heard watching the game, rather, the noise, the way they were cheering for the 49ers. I'm thinking, wait a minute, this is another Rams home game. That's what they cheered for the Rams. We're from LA.
SPEAKER_04Well, they got they got the true experience, Jackie, because they went there for the entire week, but they showed up for the game. There was over a hundred thousand fans in the stadium and most of the 100,021 people to be exact, and most of the fans were in red. So, what did that tell you that they did come? But on another note, okay, Sean McVeigh traditionally doesn't play as starters in the preseason. Okay, so let's look at that point of view because most of the teams that performed well had played in the preseason. They want to take advantage of that long time together and hard work, and the harder you work, the better you perform during the early part of the season. Because during the season, Jackie, you're right. They only have ten full practice gear padded game practices that they can use over 17 weeks. So you don't have time to really do get ready for game speed shape. So I don't know if that had something to do with it.
SPEAKER_02Well, it's it had to have had something to do with it. Because they look like a preseason game. As an offensive lineman, and I can only speak from an offensive lineman's perspective, it's one of the most technical positions that uh that that's that you play in a national football, like in football, period. And you have to hone those skills, you have to sharpen those techniques, whether it's pass blocking techniques where you're moving off the ball and creating space between a an explosive guy coming at you and you have to be able to deal with him with whatever he does, whether it's something like that, or just a good guy that can get right in front of you and bull rush you and take you back to the quarterback. You get you need to get used to setting your feet and using your arms and putting your hat in the right location. And these are all technical issues. You just can't show up and be big and think you're gonna block people in the National Football League. So for me, and I'm a I'm a player, I'm I was a player. I can never relate to what a coach was was looking at and what he was considering when he had his team prepare for the a preseason game anywhere. But I do know this as an offensive lineman, I felt a whole lot better going into the regular season when I had been challenged in the preseason, when I had turned it up and cranked it out and worked at the all the different techniques that you have to be able to deploy as an offensive lineman in order to beat your opponent. If I didn't get that work in in the preseason, I never felt comfortable. Well, we always being bigger than everybody else just doesn't cut the mustard.
SPEAKER_04Well, that's true. But now let's get to the elephant in the room, okay, Miles Garrett. Everybody was looking forward to seeing him play in this opening game. Jackie, he came in with an injury. Okay, he was on the do not practice list on Tuesday and then was activated on Wednesday and Thursday of the week of this game. You don't this? I mean, what I the only this this is the key. He didn't have wait, Jackie, he didn't have one pressure. Not one pressure, he didn't have one tackle and one sack, nothing.
SPEAKER_02Nothing. He didn't have a stack, he might as well. And he admits that he didn't press. But this is what I think happened, Vince, and I'm not sure, but I really do believe that the Rams trusted him. He probably had an injury that came up on him. He didn't know how to deal with it, and they were thinking he was gonna work his way through it. And the Rams wouldn't in the first year with him didn't know how he uh, you know, acted and how he responded, so they probably gave him the liberty to, okay, let us know how you're doing, because we know you can you're special. Just led the league in sacks last year, so we're gonna trust that you're okay and that you know we're gonna get you on the field when you need to be. So they trusted a little too much. They underestimated his injury. I think they should have done an MRI on his knee a lot sooner than they did. But but but I think perhaps the Rams just trusted him that he was uh gonna do what it takes. You know, even if you don't work him very hard, he's gonna do what it takes to be ready to play.
SPEAKER_04Well, considering what they had to give up for him, Jackie, they give up Jared Burse, a first rounder next year, a second round of the year. Four starting players, Vince. I mean, that's a lot of those draft picks. Jared Burse is four starters in the National Football League. He's still a great player, but he'd been out for on the injured reserve for four weeks. But when we come back, we'll have to touch more on that game and the reasons why the 49ers dominated Jackie. But remind our viewers, Harmonychie.com is our sponsor, and don't forget to follow us on Instagram, On Point Live with Vince and Jackie. We will be right back right after this with a lot more. Well, welcome back to On Point Live. We want to remind our viewers that we're on CRN radio uh quite a bit during the week, four to five on Tuesdays and eight to nine Pacific Standard Time, Tuesdays, Wednesdays from 11 to 12, and Saturdays from 8 to 9, Sundays from 6 to 7 in the morning. So don't forget to listen, put it on your phone, CRN radio, digital radio. Jackie, we're talking about what we saw last week with the Rams and the 49ers. Okay. From our perspective, okay, not from everybody else's. This is what we think. Right. You know, we we look at who you're gonna go up against, and you have to scout your opponent, as you know, as an offensive tackle, you would know who you're gonna be blocking that week. All right? Who you're gonna face? You're gonna face two tall Jones, you're gonna face uh Howie Long, uh you know You name it.
SPEAKER_02I mean the list goes on and on and on. They're all beast, Vince. They're all beast. You have to know them in any defensive line.
SPEAKER_04You have to know them in and out of the 49ers was Trent Williams, okay? One of the all-time great offensive left tackles. Absolutely. Okay, Jackie, what happened in that game?
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean, how he was just ready for him. You know what? In my mind, I thought he would struggle. I thought Trent Williams was struggled. Trent Williams is the oldest offensive lineman in pro football, and I think he is the highest paid or the second highest paid offensive lineman of pro football, and he's playing the most important position on the offensive line, at least one of them, and that's the left tackle. I like to think the right tackle is pretty important too. But what I saw from Trent Williams was a guy who was technically sound, he took a very good pass set, he didn't flip his hips too soon on him, and then when he did, he took him out and away from the quarterback. Uh Miles Garrett was was non was a non uh impact. He was a non-factor in this game. There's no doubt about it. And Trent Williams is to be commended. He never once let up, he he he didn't just let him come off the block without closing that big body on him and pushing him away from the pocket. And I I was so impressed with that. Really impressed.
SPEAKER_04What I'd have to think that gave him uh an edge too, and up uh an arm up on Miles Garrett was the fact that Kyle Shannon had a really good scheme of attack, and he always has against the Rams. Always has. He likes to use that rushing game and that play action and that movement and that uh Juice coming across with his fullback and coming up and the screens. How many different screens did he call? Yeah, but Brock Purdy played in the preseason, he was ready, he was sharp, probably uh Kyle said he's had one of his best preseasons that he's ever had, threw for three touchdowns, through the one interception. But hey, but you know, again, the secondary of the Rams, playing the 49ers on offense, you know, you would think they would go match up man to man because they've got guys like Trent McDuffie, they got uh uh Jalen Watson. Absolutely okay, they played, but they played 77% zone.
SPEAKER_0277% zone defense when these guys were supposed to be some of the best man-to-man cover guys in all of pro football. And that was what kind of threw me off because I remember asking uh McDuffie, I said, Can you cover? And McDuffie, he looked a bit like I was crazy for asking him. He said, Yeah, I can cover. Well, we didn't see very much indication of that relative to the the scheme that they were playing. He was playing zone, he's a he's a he's not the biggest guy in the world. And you know, when you play a lot of zone coverage, Vince, my understanding is it's because you got better tacklers than you do cover guys. Yeah. And those guys are very smart and instinctive, know how to get to their drops in the zone coverages, and they don't have to be running man-to-man with good wide receivers like, you know, the the ones that the Rams were going to be serving up at them. So for me, you know, it it just seems like they did what they had to do to take the Rams out of their game plan and not to expose themselves uh in their weaknesses. And that was that would have been probably would have been man-to-man coverage.
SPEAKER_04Well, I felt that Kyle Shanahan's schemes were superior than to the Rams. And you know, what when they can rush 174 yards.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that that was the part. And the Rams were averaging about five yards a clip on that first five or six years.
SPEAKER_04Now, here they brought back Debo Samuel. They bring in a guy like Mike Evans and then Demarcus Robinson, who was formerly with the Rams, all caught touchdowns.
SPEAKER_02All caught touchdowns. And not only that, Vince, you mentioned Debo Sanders. He impacted he impacted the game in all three phases, Vince. Yeah. He had a kickoff return for big yarders out near midfield. He had uh several receptions. Then he lined up in the backfield. Line up in the backfield at running back, and they gave him the ball, and he had about 10 yards to carry on that. I mean, it just it was just amazing to me how Shanahan utilizes the personnel. He has, not only the physiques, Vince, but the mentality. How many wide receivers do you know would have the go-nads or the conads or whatever you want to call them, to tell a coach and allow coach to put him in an I back and give him a football and insert him into the line of scrimmage? There's not too many running wide receivers in the National Football League that's gonna go for something. Maybe Puka Nakura. He's a big physical guy, but this guy was he was just he was outstanding in my opinion. Debo didn't miss a skip. Didn't miss a didn't miss a didn't miss a beat. Just sent me a beat. And felt and looked like he was at home beating back in San Francisco.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it did, and they looked very secure. They looked very comfortable in the middle of the year.
SPEAKER_02What about the big wide receiver, Evans? He was unbelievable. Does it matter who's throwing him the ball, Vince? You know, he looked like a best hands.
SPEAKER_04He looked like a young receiver out there.
SPEAKER_02He did he's got the best hands probably of any receiver in pro football right now. I don't think he's the quickest, I don't think he's the fastest, but he's a b he uses what he has, which is gr towering uh size and everything over these little corners, and he's got great hands.
SPEAKER_04But Jackie, I saw him running routes that he typically never ran with the Buccaneers. Okay, so here's a guy that comes in that's one of an all-pro receiver, comes to the 49ers, and he sits right into those meetings, those coaching meetings, and looks at the game plan and look at the routes that he's running now. Some of these routes he's never ran before, but with through it with his experience, he made them look like like Jim. Yeah. They were s they were so perfect. I mean, it was he was at the right spot at the right time all the time.
SPEAKER_02He was always in a position to make a catch.
SPEAKER_04So, I mean, that's coaching. So again, it goes back to coaching. And then here's another question.
SPEAKER_02And player acquisition, too, Vince. Don't forget that. You as a as as as a Oh, they had the whole team ready, Jack.
SPEAKER_04He had Bosa ready to go. He had Fred Warner, they were they were on top of things on the defensive right. They rushed, they put pressure on Matt Stafford. Matt Stafford did not have time like he normally does to just dissect the defense. No, he didn't.
SPEAKER_02They were just confused. You know, in in Matthew Stafford's defense. I I happen to believe in Matthew Stafford. I happen to think that he is the reigning uh MVP of the National Football League for a reason. Now, the question has to be why what was the difference between this year and last year? Well, we know that last year he started off with an injury with a back, and so he was constantly being put in situation or put himself in a situation so he could tax these difficulties that he was dealing with. I don't know that he had any problems with his back this summer, didn't hear a word about him having a problem with his back. So I thought that whatever it was that they did towards the end of the preseason last year, they were doing it now. He wasn't having any problems, and he was set to get off to another big start. But Matthew Stafford, you know, he looked like he hadn't played football since last year. I know. I mean, he looked like a preseason. Better at the end of last year than he did this go around. And I I don't care what you say, Vince, and I like McVay as a coach, but the being too protective of guys that needs to get repetitions is a is a is a direct rela has a direct relationship to your success. You cannot shelter football players, man. You got to put them in a position where they can do their thing and do it to the best of their ability and fail some even. You gotta put them in that position if you expect them to from opening day to be the same type of player that you that you're paying.
SPEAKER_04You gotta wear them out in the preseason. You gotta wear them. You gotta get these guys ready to go because it's a long grueling season. It's a long grueling season. And you gotta be ready to go. It starts right now. It starts right now. And when those guys come to camp, they are always in tip-top shape. So they're ready to move. Here's another decision, real quick, Jackie, that they decided to leave Aaron Donald back. He never traveled with the team, and they had all their top draft picks inactive for week one. Now, again, another coaching decision, why you do that. I mean, he felt it was best for the team, but it didn't work out right. It just didn't work out, the entire thing did not work out.
SPEAKER_02Nothing worked out. You mentioned defensive coordinator Chris Shuler playing man-to-man corners in zone almost 80% of the time. That that made no sense to anybody who understands why they brought Trent McDuffie and Jalen Watson in here to begin with. Now, when you start talking about, you know, on the o on the offensive side of the ball and what McVeigh was doing over there, then you have to conclude that he thought that these guys were ready to roll. Yeah. And he thought and figured that they were going to be able to execute at a level certainly much higher than what they did. But the thing that perhaps McVeigh underestimated, and I'm sure he's going to talk himself and convince himself of the fact that he did this, was how important it is to get all of your players. And I'll say it again, all of your players preseason reps. There's a whole different mentality, you know, of competing in a preseason game against an opponent and then competing in practice.
SPEAKER_04Well, we you know, we talked about this Rams 49ers games. We have to kind of mention some of these other great teams. There were so many points scored in this uh first week of the regular season, Jackie. The Bears creamed the Panthers 59 to 37, 96 points scored in this game. That's another example of here you go, Ben Johnson just just resurrecting this team. He wants to have the highest scoring team in Chicago Bear history.
SPEAKER_02And he's verbalized that. He's verbalized that, Vince. And and you know what? There's nothing wrong with you know of making a statement of what you want to get accomplished, especially if you're willing to put the work in. Jackie, they had six rushing touchdowns. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_04You would think they're really all throwing the ball. So what's this game coming to? Absolutely. Running the football is gonna open up your offense.
SPEAKER_02Vince, as you said, what is almost 80% of the time now? Almost. They're putting that quarterback under center, and that poses a dual threat right now, tree, a triple threat, actually. You're gonna hand the ball off, you're gonna use throw play action pass, or you're gonna set up and and and drop back. It takes the quarter, it takes all of the uh anticipation from the defense right on out of the right right on out of the it keeps your offense versatile, it keeps it very versatile, keeps it wide open.
SPEAKER_04It's one of those. We're gonna come back and discuss a lot of these games and go over some of the what we felt were the big key signals of these some of these wins this past weekend in the NFL. Uh remind our viewers again to to follow us on our website onpointlive.net, and uh also email us if you want. So we'll be right back.
SPEAKER_02That's true.

SPEAKER_04Well, welcome back to On Point Live right here at CRN Studios in Los Angeles. Jackie, we have to uh again just tell our viewers back home that Harmony Cheese does produce some of this great cheese out of Wisconsin. Your favorite cheese is Alberghli?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. That's right.
SPEAKER_04Abrighely? That's right. Are you you still got any more left at home?
SPEAKER_02I'm getting low, man. I'm getting a little low and maybe it's the best thing to happen to me. HarmonyCheese.com. Just go right on there and get your own. Did you ever take in Abrighelli and put it on a piece of wheat toast and put it in the oven and just toast it till the brown gets till the toast starts get brown? Oh man. Well, and then you take it out and you put yourself some grape jelly on there. Oh, you just strawberry jam on top. Oh man. I'm telling you, you're missing something. All right.
SPEAKER_04I might have to get that recipe from you. Simple pleasure in life, man. We'll we'll take care of that later. Well, let's get back to the NFL uh week one. Uh some big games, obviously, some big wins for a lot of teams. And uh, you know, we had our little picks. We'll go over at the end of the uh our segment, but the Ravens took care of the Colts. Young offensive coordinator. Don't forget to say, how old is he then? He's 30 years old. 30 years old. But when Todd Munkin left, I felt that the Ravens just may slip a little. Yeah, well, you were more concerned about Lamar slipping. He's added a lot more information to this team, even more than they had before.
SPEAKER_02Lamar looks more comfortable now running the offense than he did uh under Munkin, if you ask me. He he was it was very impressive, Vince. And Lamar, he just uh, you know, let me tell you, a couple of days uh into last week before the game, yeah, it was mentioned that Lamar is on the verge of signing a contract extension that will pay him $70 million a year. Now that's not that that's you don't pay somebody who's falling going in that direction $70 million a year. You don't have that conversation. He's a rising star, even though he's been been an MVP a couple years. But for last season, and I think it was real close, he could have been a three consecutive reigning MVP.
SPEAKER_04So Declan Doyle, Jackie, was at home in Iowa. Okay, he gets a call from Sean Payton. Say, I want you on my T. You're talking about the defensive coordinator. This is the offensive coordinator for the Ravens, and he elected, he was thrilled to go at a young age like that. He went to the Saints with Sean Payton, and you can understand where his background came from. Then Sean goes to the Broncos, he brought in with him there. Then he goes to work with Ben Johnson last year with the Bears. He's learning from some of the best.
SPEAKER_02And the that that's plenty, that's calling games.
SPEAKER_04And all of a sudden now he's with the Ravens. Right. I didn't even know that. Right.
SPEAKER_02Okay. He he he really has added a lot to Lamar. Ravens fans. I thought Lamar looked very comfortable with Vincent. He did.
SPEAKER_04He did really more in control of the game. So did Zay Flowers. Was he awesome or what? Okay, how about the Bills and Texans? I I'm watching this game, and this is this is against one of the toughest, forceful defenses in football with D'Amico Ryan's head they win the game 36 to 31. Have you seen the Texans defense give up 36 points?
SPEAKER_02Demico Ryans has got to be the sickiest coach in the National Football League. He was a player on some of the stadiest defenses that that organization has ever had. Now he's the head coach, and you know his emphasis is on stopping good quarterback play, limiting running, rushing attacks, and doing all the things you need to do on the defensive side of the ball to win games. And when he shows up with a team that allows this kind of success, it tells you how good that other team really must be. And Vince, we were laughing. What was it, about a 40-yard pass that Josh Allen threw? Oh my goodness. He talked about this pass, Corey, like it was something he had never seen. Like something he had never seen before.
SPEAKER_04This this guy's a superman. I'm telling you, because let me tell you what happened the series before that pass. He throws the ball and he gets hit in the hand. Okay, it wasn't a helmet. Uh-huh. It was a forceful hit to his hand. Most quarterbacks would have broke their hand. Jackie, he just flicked it and he goes to the sideline. No problem. Next series, he comes in, he throws a dart. This ball was sizzling right through the defense. On a 37, wait, a 37-yard post route to Joshua Palmer. Okay, the defense was perfect. They were in, they were ready there. The ball goes right through two guys.
SPEAKER_02Hey, Corey, you know if a quarterback is going on like this about the throw that another quarterback made, it must have been special, right? Oh my gosh. I've I've been talking about it.
SPEAKER_04With that kind of arm strength and that size and durability. I mean, he can do everything. Well, think about it, Vince. The man is what? 6'5? Against the Titans. 2'4.
SPEAKER_02I mean, the uh the the Texans. Yeah, the man weighs 240 pounds. So he's bigger than most of the edge rushers, most of the linebackers now, because they got to cover those little backers. The guy's a big stud, man. You didn't even mention the fact that he single-handedly accounted for four touchdowns. I know.
SPEAKER_04He rushed for 23 yards. The team only rushed, James Cook only rushed 44 yards. He did everything else. He had two rushing touchdowns, man. He had wait, we're not talking about some, you know, pushover defense.
SPEAKER_02No, we're talking about a highly motivated That's Demico Ryan's defense now. This defense is the crown. This is the crowning glory. It's the crowning glory of this football team. It is. Of the Texan football team. Will Anderson and a bunch of guys. That's just as simple as it came to the show. Let's talk about another star.
SPEAKER_04Anything simpler than that. Let's talk about another star. Who is that? Another coach, great coach. And you know, it starts at the coaching. It starts at the top. You ask these guys. Yeah. It go trickles right down. Liam Cohen with the Jaguars. Some guys are thinking this team could go all the way.
SPEAKER_02They're in the person.
SPEAKER_04All right. They okay. He Trevor Lawrence throws for four touchdowns. 78% completion. And Jackie, he had 151 QBR.
SPEAKER_02He had five incompletions.
SPEAKER_04Perfect QBR rating is 153. Five incompletions. It's almost near perfect. Unbelievable. I mean, that's all coaching. It is. Okay. It really is.
SPEAKER_02It's cool and and and understanding defenses too. You know, that's the reason why I take my hat off to a lot of these guys, you know, are getting promoted to be uh head coaches from the offensive coordinator position. Because if you can attack defenses and you know what you're doing, and you can and and and people are gonna surround you with the kind of talent you need, if you can do that, Vince, you have you are valuable. You know, I and I put him right there with Shanahan and Meg Vay. These are valuable, valuable coaches.
SPEAKER_04Hey, let's go to MetLife Stadium, Jackie, where the New York Giants played the Cowboys, divisional rivals, okay? Here we think, whoa, the Cowboys is gonna turn around this year. Well, wait a minute. You got John Harbaugh. Oh man. They say culture is changed in New York now.
SPEAKER_02Oh, there's no doubt about it.
SPEAKER_04It's back to those Lawrence Taylor kind of days. They have a defense, they're playing, they're running the football. Jackie, yards they rushed them all for? What was it? Scataboo. Okay, they rushed for 165 yards.
SPEAKER_02165 yards. But Vince, how about this? At some point in time, somebody went to a guy named Patrick Ricard in that organization and probably said to him, you're a little bit short to be an offensive tackle or offensive guard, but we like your toughness. Would you consider letting us convert you to fullback? Yes. They have a six foot three, three hundred-pound fullback Vince. And if you watch that game, the way he inserted himself into the line of scrimmage, avoided blocks to get to his backer, to cover his backer up, or pick up safeties, or help offense, all of this was superior.
SPEAKER_04Hey, Jackie, imagine being a linebacker, and all of a sudden you see this guy, Ricard, coming at you, and then Scatterboo right behind him.
SPEAKER_02Right behind him. How are you gonna stop these guys? You know what? And and it doesn't surprise me, Vince, because the coach's mentality is such that he believes in creating a culture that says we're gonna be more physical than anybody.
SPEAKER_04Jackie, when you have the running game like that, as you know, okay, it it just takes the the the pass rush right out of it. Right.
SPEAKER_02It beat it doesn't beat the pass. It doesn't take the pass rush out, it beats the pass rush. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Well, Jackson's the quarterback Jackson Dart was impressive too, Jackie. Oh, he was. And he can run the football. They're not as shy of letting the quarterback run a direct run and just do a bootleg run. Right. Okay, so that really opens up your offense and that keeps you real flexible, okay? And you get a guy like Isaiah Likely from the Ravens, who was a star tight end for for um Lamar. Yeah. Okay, he comes to the Cowboys. John Harbaugh knows how good he is, great guy, great attitude, and Jackie, he was a dominance maker.
SPEAKER_02You know what? When he when when um the head coach was at Baltimore, he had a tight end. What was his name, Corey? Mark Andrews. Mark Andrews. Yeah. And Mark Andrews, as you'll remember, he learned from him. He clocked balls everywhere. He was all over the field. He was a critical part of that offensive attack. And I I was listening to uh one of the defensive coordinators who watched this game and he said, I've seen that picture a thousand times. You know they're gonna throw to the whoever it is playing tight end, it's gonna be a critical part of what they do. It's simple as that. It's like he's the dump, the dump off guy, most of the point.
SPEAKER_04Okay, let's talk about this next game. The Vikings at the Packers. Oh my goodness. All right.
SPEAKER_02This is what I know about that game, Vince. The Vikings are the first team in NFL history to be down by 12 plus points with under 20 minutes left in regulation and end up winning by 17 points.
SPEAKER_04That's a 29-point swing in 20 minutes. Never happened in the NFL before. Absolutely. It was a collapse. And you know what the play that started this whole thing around? What was it? Matt LaFleur tries to get a a call. He took the points off the field goal. That was a problem. And they were they still didn't get a first down, they're still fourth and one. This gave the Vikings the impetus they need to start their resurrection, to start to come back. Yeah, and Jackie, they failed on the fourth and one, they took over, game over. The rest of the game was all Vikings. And Carson Wentz went to town. Speaking of Carson Wentz.
SPEAKER_02So what's the coach doing? Speaking of Carson Wentz, their head coach, Kevin O'Connell, used to train quarterbacks. And I have a picture in my at home of me, uh, Jared Goff, and Carson Wentz. Okay. He has been working with Carson Wentz in the off-seasons. Oh, he knows him well. He knows him very well. That's why he's on the team. That's why he's on the team. And what did he do? He threw for three touchdowns. That had to have been his most productive day as a pro so far.
SPEAKER_04I know.
SPEAKER_02So it just speaks volumes for having that kind of you know mentorship that Kevin uh O'Connor was providing for he and Jared Goff.
SPEAKER_04Real quickly, let's go to some of these other games. The Eagles played Washington Commanders, okay? They win 24-22. I think it was all Vic Fangio's defense. I mean, they're impressive. They look so and Jalen Hurts doesn't make errors. He doesn't make mistakes.
SPEAKER_02And he seems, I mean, he had three touchdowns, no turnovers. He excelled attacking downfield. He threw the ball downfield. They're gonna get a lot better, though, Jalen. It wasn't just a bunch of dump offs. They're gonna get better. He operated from the this guy's gotten more and more comfortable in the pocket. Even though he lost one of his offensive linemen and everything, and I think the right tackle, uh big one big uh Lane Johnson is nicked up a little bit. He still has a lot of confidence in in his line and the protection. Otherwise, he don't stand in the pocket and sit there unwried at all at a point.
SPEAKER_04How about the Raiders Dolphins? Raiders look good. Kirk Cousins, okay, that's Clint Kubiak's team, Jack. And then I might my backup running back who I love, Mike Washington, rushed for 5.9 yards per carry. Yeah, but on average. So if seven yards seven rushes, 41 yards, they're gonna they're gonna come on. That's the team that's coming off.
SPEAKER_02I believe in Clint Kubiak. I do too. How about the how about the most And just was Fernando Mendoza? He's watching, Jackie.
SPEAKER_04He's getting better, man. Was he active? Yes, he's right there watching now. Hey, he's ready to go. How about the Cardinals and the Chargers? This is the most surprising game. The biggest surprise in this game.
SPEAKER_02It was the biggest surprise in the in the probably probably next to the Rams. It was the biggest surprise that occurred. And you know, Jim Harbaugh has gone on record. We heard him on the radio this morning coming in, and he admitted that the problem that he had and that his team faced was the fact that they had not taken enough reps in the preseason games. Now, here's a guy that you and I, along with his brother in New York, we concluded that the culture was going to change, that they were gonna be a different football team, and it was gonna be centered around their physicality. Well, how they ran the ball and how they did this, and then what Jim comes out and he admits it.
SPEAKER_04Vince, he admitted it right away. Mike LaFleur, the Cardinals, Jackie, they got it going. Where's the ingenuity for uh for Mike McDaniel? He's got to come on. Got it. Lions beat the Saints 31-30, Jackie. I mean, that was a great comeback in overtime. All right. How about how about we again? I wanted to talk about the Bengals and the Bucks, man. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. The Bengals and the Bucks. And the Chiefs beat the Broncos Sunday, Monday night football. Unbelievable.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, much to much to Corey's dismay. I know. We'll have to be right back.
SPEAKER_04We will finish and then we'll give you our predictions for next week, right here on On Point. So don't go away.

You both and I, you and I were the same, 10 and 6. 10 and 6. Corey, 9 and 7. 9 and 7. We beat him. Okay, let's go this week. All right, yeah. That's right. He picked the wrong team. All right. How about the first game, Thursday night? The Lions at the Bills, Jackie. Who do you like? I'm going with Buffalo. How about you, Corey? Buffalo. Me too, the Bills. All right. Eagles at the Titans. I'm going with Philadelphia. Oh, man. Eagles as well. Okay, Corey. How about the Steelers at the Patriots? I'm going with Pittsburgh. I'm going to go with the Patriots. I'm going with the Patriots. Okay, difference. Okay. Vikings at the Bears.
SPEAKER_02I'm going with Chicago.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'll take 59 points. I'll go with the Bears. Me too. I got that. Panthers at the Falcons.
SPEAKER_02Going with Carolina.
SPEAKER_04Me as well, Panthers. Oh, you like the young. Okay, I like the Panthers too. I'll take the how about the Packers and the Jets? I'll take the Packers.
SPEAKER_02I'm taking the Packers as well.
SPEAKER_04Packers. Okay. Unified. Saints at the Ravens. Lamar. Lamar. Baltimore. Okay, we're all in agreement. Bengals at the Texans. Houston's going to be angry, Vince. For a recap? How about you? Texans as well. I'm going to go with the Texans too, as much as I like Joe Burrow. Okay, Cleveland Browns at the Bucks. Tampa Bay. Give me the Buccos. They're bouncing back. They're bouncing back this week. Okay, the Jaguars at the Broncos.
SPEAKER_02I'm going with Jacksonville.
SPEAKER_03I love Jacksonville, but I have to pick the Broncos one more time before I give up. He's so loyal to the Broncos. I'm going with Corey on the Broncos.
SPEAKER_02He's so loyal to the Broncos. He just can't pick it up.
SPEAKER_04Raiders at Chargers. Ooh, that's crushing.
SPEAKER_02I'm going to have to go with the Chargers. I just can't see Harbaugh not running. How about you?
SPEAKER_04Chargers bounce back to Seahawks at Cardinals. Ooh, both won and no. I'm going with Seattle.
SPEAKER_02Even Arizona, man. Mike McDonald, I like Seattle.
SPEAKER_04They're good. Not as good as the Seahawks yet. Dolphins at the 49ers.
SPEAKER_02I'm going with San Francisco today.
SPEAKER_04San Francisco. Washington at the Cowboys.
SPEAKER_02I'm going with Dallas.
SPEAKER_04I'm going with Dallas. I'm going Dallas. Colts at the Chiefs. Colts at the Chiefs. Chiefs City. I got Kansas City. And the Giants at the Rams. This is the one. I'm picking the Rams. I have the Giants.
SPEAKER_02They let them run the football down their throats.
SPEAKER_04Let me remind all our viewers, okay, make sure you pick that Monday night game. The Giants at the Rams. The winner for the first two weeks is going to win our prize, and uh we'll announce it next week. Jeff, this this game, Jackie, the Chiefs and the Broncos, man, was that unbelievable, man. I mean, number 70, Khalil Benson. He's the first undrafted rookie to start an NFL season over for Patrick Mahomes. Absolutely. And they took it to the Broncos.
SPEAKER_02And you know what? He was the starting right tackle for Indiana last year. Now you're coming to the pros where it's even tougher. And they put him at left tackle vents, and this kid is 6'53.
SPEAKER_04And his wife are congratulating everybody in the tunnel. Him too. What do we say, Stacky? Stay on the point.
